Financial Planning

Fee-based financial planning is at the heart of everything we do at the Davis Financial Group. We believe in the primacy of the comprehensive financial plan to bring together and focus our clients’ investment, legal, tax, insurance and estate matters in a way that aligns both the empirical data and our clients’ emotions around these issues to help direct them toward decisions that are truly “right” – for them.

By modelling every aspect of our clients’ financial lives, we help demonstrate how all the pieces of one’s finances are interconnected and interdependent. We then project the model out into the future to show the hypothetical results of various decision-making scenarios that illustrate clients’ goals and objectives, and we use these models to form the basis of a plan.

Our approach is descriptive rather than prescriptive; that is, we always provide alternate routes and options for getting our clients where they want to go. Our advice is generic and objective, never “product” specific. We build alternatives for our clients by adding “layers” onto their base facts, solution by solution, all meant to improve upon their current situation.

We illustrate these improvements side by side with the current and alternate realities. For example, “what will your situation look like in 20 years if you kept doing exactly what you’re doing”, or “here’s what your situation would be if you retired at 60 instead of 65”, or “let’s see what gets transferred to your heirs without a particular kind of trust (your “base facts”), and here’s the improved scenario by adding said trust”. Not everything works—there’s certainly some trial and error—and a large part of our effort involves research and brainstorming (a team effort) that usually results in alternatives yielding critical improvements.

Once we have found beneficial interventions, we provide our recommendations and “deliver” the plan to our clients. The finished plan, in hard copy and/or available on a personalized web site that we create specifically for clients, includes a summary of all assumptions and the base facts we used to arrive at our analysis and our set of recommendations. The plans we create direct whatever additional work we do for clients in the area of investment management and insurance services, and helps direct the work of our clients’ other advisers as well.

We see our role as that of the PCP (Primary Care Provider) of our clients’ financial lives; providing analysis of their current state of financial health, providing recommendations for how to improve upon it, referring them to the appropriate specialists, and coordinating and quarterbacking their ongoing financial wellbeing. It is in this endeavor that perhaps the most important thing we do is to bring together all of our clients’ existing advisors, such as attorneys, bankers and accountants, to help ensure their entire professional team is around the table, on the same page, utilizing the most up-to-date and complete data, and dedicated to supporting and advancing their interests.

An additional element of our offering is that we often bring other family members into the planning process. This multi-generational approach to planning allows our clients to eliminate the often unnecessarily secretive nature of a family’s finances, turning on the lights for their children—and often their grandchildren—in the effort to provide piece of mind, security and sustainability to a family’s plan, and to help our clients realize their intentions.
